Assistant Transport Planner, Future Mobility Zone
Salary range: £25,811 - £30,191 per annum
Hours: 36.50 hours per week
Contract: permanent


Who we need
We are looking for a highly-motivated individual who wants the challenge, but also rewards, of work in a high-performing team researching, developing, and appraising local transport and future mobility projects - in the UK's first Future Mobility Zone (FMZ).


You are a numerate problem-solver, with some spreadsheet/database skills, plus an interest in and knowledge of transport modelling and appraisal gained at University or in work experience.


Now you want to learn more, and develop your capabilities and understanding in these areas through work on innovative, cutting-edge transport and mobility projects, that will make a difference to the daily lives of all our communities.


About the team
The transport planning team is a small, focused, supportive group of transport experts, accountable for forecasting, prioritisation, and appraisal of transport and mobility projects.


We work closely with colleagues across the Policy, Strategy, and Innovation Directorate, and employ a wide range of tools, models, and technical approaches in this activity.


The team is also central to the downstream monitoring and evaluation of the impacts of transport and future mobility projects, and is responsible for adding results to the evidence base for new project development.


About the FMZ
The West Midlands will be the UK's first FMZ, leading the way for all major urban centres in the UK.

A trailblazing £20m grant will build on the West Midlands' existing unique programme of new 5G communications technology and automotive R&D to unlock new transport opportunities for residents, commuters and businesses.


The FMZ will see work to improve our understanding of travel behaviour using innovative market segmentation and a new online research community.

It will also pilot new traveller information systems working seamlessly across all modes, warning of disruption in real-time, and coupled with secure, best-price payment accounts for a range of public services (building on the existing West Midlands Swift payment system, the largest outside London).


The FMZ will also strengthen the underlying systems capability to provide and demonstrate innovative transport options (whether around technical innovations like Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, or around behavioural incentives like Mobility Credits), and test new social and commercial delivery models for these, to ensure they complement existing services.

Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) plans, develops and manages an integrated transport system for the West Midlands that is reliable, affordable and accessible for all.

It is the transport arm of the West Midlands Combined Authority.
