We have an exciting opportunity within our technical team at Midlands Connect… Do you have a professional background in national and local government policy making? Do you understand, and have experience of developing sustainability policies? If you are a dynamic, experienced production leader of policy and research outputs within the transport sector we will be keen to speak with you.

Who we are

As the Sub-National Transport Body (STB) for the Midlands, Midlands Connect are developing a regional plan which aims to boost economic growth whilst at the same time reducing transport's part in the climate emergency and having a positive impact on quality of life for our citizens.

In order to be successful our team will have to ensure that we fully understand aspects such as: the economy, housing, social policy and the impacts of climate change.

We are looking for additions to our team who will ensure that our Strategy and projects consider much wider agendas that just transport.

About the team

You will be working as part of the ‘Technical Team' within Midlands Connect.

This team is charged with the development of our refreshed strategy and finding ways to accelerate the major transport infrastructure requirements of the region.

Embedding wide policy agendas into our understanding of the need for infrastructure will be a vital component of making compelling cases for funding.

Who we need

We are looking for someone with a professional background in national and local government policy making; an understanding of and interest in transport is desirable but having worked in other policy areas will help us to better embedded wide agendas into our work; and a thorough understanding of all aspects of the sustainability agenda is highly desirable.

You will be working with our Lead Economist to undertake hands-on research to understand how transport links to wider policy agendas and developing policy positions for Midlands Connect on a number of areas; particularly related to our Strategy Refresh.

Specifically, this will include developing our Sustainability Policy and Decarbonisation Pathway to ensure it is embedded into our planning and working practices.

Working nationally with other STBs and the Department for Transport to help shape national policy on the role of STBs and working with the rest of the Technical Team you will assist with the strategic narrative behind both the overall strategy for regional transport investment and the case for specific schemes.

You will reach out to, and work with government departments, Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), the Midlands Engine etc to ensure that our plans are embedded into their thinking and vice versa.

This is a remote working opportunity until a date is agreed for the Midlands Connect team to return to our usual place of work at Baskerville House, Centenary Square, Birmingham.

Although Midlands Connect is based in Birmingham, the way we have all worked remotely over the past few months has shown us how we can make that work.

We are therefore open to discussions regarding the balance between working from home and out of the office when we do return.

Our priority is to keep all our employees safe and well during this time.

We will be working remotely for the foreseeable future, and we are doing everything we can to ensure all our employees can enjoy a comfortable remote working space.
